New River Marathon Registration Open

The second annual New River Marathon is scheduled for May 5 along the banks of the New River in the Brownwood, Todd and Fleetwood communities.

This year's event will again include a half-marathon, 5K and a 1-mile fun run. Almost 800 runners participated in the inaugural event. The fun run is scheduled for Friday evening during the pre-race dinner festivities, and the other three will be run Saturday morning.

The New River Marathon is certified by USA Track and Field and serves as a Boston Marathon qualifying event. The half-marathon course is in the certification process.

?From the conception we wanted the runners and their families to have a great racing experience, to experience the beauty of our New River Valley, Ashe County, and North Carolina's High Country, and to enjoy a taste of mountain hospitality,? said race co-director Ken Sevensky in a prepared statement. ?It was our desire to create a race festival that offered races that appealed to runners of all abilities.?

The Fleetwood and Todd volunteer fire departments assisted as sponsors. Sevensky said the number of race entrants currently is double the same time period of last year.

Amantha Mill is again scheduled to serve up High Country bluegrass music at the finish line.
