Railroad Grade Road Biking
Railroad Grade
Road has long been known as a great spot for North Carolina
mountain biking, and is a quick 10 mile paved road that runs
between Fleetwood NC and Todd NC. Built on an old railroad
grade that was part of the Virginia Creeper Trail, Railroad
Grade Road is almost flat the whole 10 miles and very
narrow. In fact, Railroad Grade Road is so narrow that there
is no center stripe dividing it into two lanes, and in some
places it is not wide enough for two cars to pass one
another.
Biking on Railroad Grade Road is a favorite pastime for
vacationers and residents, as it runs along the South Fork
of the New River, one of the oldest rivers in the country.
To spend the day Railroad Grade Road biking, you can access
the road in Todd or in Fleetwood. The Todd NC access point
is just off NC Hwy 194. You can park at the Todd General
Store, look for the red caboose near the church for the
access point. The Fleetwood NC access point is a left turn
off NC Hwy 221 just past the Fleetwood School. You’ll go
past the church and post office in Fleetwood and see on the
left, Railroad Grade Road.
Share the road when Railroad Grade Road biking; remember
that motorists and others do live on the road and use it as
a scenic cut through. As long as you keep this in mind,
you’ll enjoy Railroad Grade Road biking and North Carolina
mountain biking in Ashe County NC.
