"100 Mile" Challenge Hike Sat, June 10th - 10:00am
New river state park 221 visitor center / River Run, Hickory trail
Need to add a few miles to your log? Join a State Ranger at the visitor center off of highway 221 in the New
River State Park for a 2.4 mile hike. We will enjoy the beautiful weather and talked about what nature is up to
during this season. It is recommended to where sturdy shoes and bring a water bottle.

Wildflower Hike Sat, June 10th - 2:00pm
Wagoner Access
Join a ranger for a 1 mile hike along the New River and in search of June wildflowers, ferns, and trees.
Wear good walking shoes and bring a bottle of
water. Feel free to bring your camera as well, to capture the beauty, and leave it for others to
enjoy.

Meet a park ranger for hands on search for aquatic insects in the New River. This program uses citizen science to calculate the health of the Gem of Ashe County. Come prepared to get wet and wear sturdy water shoes. Just a little math required. Meet at the contact station of Wagoner Access.
Slithering Snakes! Sat, June 17th - 10:00am

Meet a park ranger to learn lots of things about snakes. We will talk about the common snakes of the High Country & the difference between venomous & non-venomous snakes.

Guided Canoe Trip Sun, June 18th - 2:00pm
Hwy 221 Access - Lower Parking Area
Canoe the New River with a park ranger and learn the history of the river, and basic canoe instruction while you enjoy a leisurely trip down the river. Please wear clothing and shoes suitable for the water and be aware that the water temperature is cooler than the air. We will meet at New River State Park's Hwy 221 Access lower parking area. Don't forget to log your canoe trip, if you are working towards you 100 miles in the 100 mile challenge. For more information about the 100 mile challenge please go to www.nc100mile.org
Space is limited and reservations are required. There is a small fee per person to cover the cost of shuttle

Jr. Ranger Camp Mon, June 19th - June 22nd
221 Access Area Visitor Center
Explore, learn and help out your state parks! Activities are geared for children ages 6-12 and includeenvironmental education, interpretation of the area?s natural resources, and responsible recreation. JuniorRangers help park rangers take care of the park's natural resources, follow park rules to stay safe and teach their
friends and family what they learn about the park and natural world.
We will meet at the 221 Access Visitor Center from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. each day. Please bring a packed
lunch, bottled water and be prepared to get wet.
Space is limited to 10 participants, so please call the park at 336-982-2587 for more information and to sign up.

Join a park ranger to learn about natures "dam builders"...the good...the hazards...and their role in the eco- system of our forests and waterways. There will be a short hike to look at beaver signs. Please bring water, and dress for the weather.
